What Is This Thing Called VoIP? Print E-mail
Written by Linda Halladay

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same service, but others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. Also, while some VoIP services only work over your computer or a special VoIP phone, other services allow you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter. (Below, I will tell you about ACN’s network and services.)

So what’s the big deal about VoIP? The Economist in 2005 stated that VoIP is a disruptive technology that will replace the legacy telecom companies. Previous to VoIP, a disruptive technology was the PC … it replaced the main frames, changed the way we do business, became a necessary part of our daily personal lives and brought IBM to its knees. VoIP promises to be even more disruptive, and of even greater benefit to consumers, than personal computers. VoIP allows users to make free calls (depending on the service being used) to anyone within the US and Canada and very “cheap” long distance calls to Europe, Asia, and South America. Also, VoIP provides many more features for free to it’s customers that the incumbent telecom companies charge a pretty penny for. All of which spells trouble for incumbent telecom operators. The savings can be up to 50% when compared to the traditional phone line service and the consumer also saves over 50 % on the regulatory fees and taxes charged on landline phone services.

The 2005 The Economist forecast appears to be coming true. Already on a tear, VoIP service is predicted to grow 18-fold in the US -- from $1.24 billion in 2004 to $23.4 billion in 2009 -- representing total revenues of $62 billion to be spent on the technology over this five-year period. The number of US VoIP consumers was 11.8 million in the second quarter 2007 and doubling by 2011. In Europe, VoIP is huge. According to recent industry reports, VoIP consumer market in Europe is predicted to grow faster than North America and Asia Pacific, with growth increasing every quarter. More than 14 million new subscribers joined the VoIP ranks in 2006. It’s forecasted that the number of VoIP users more than doubled to about 34 million at the end of 2007. The countries with the largest VoIP subscriber gains include France, Germany and the Netherlands.

VoIP is changing the face of telecommunications because new features are software driven and can be added to a consumer’s service with a down load. VoIP is bringing the world closer and making it easier for people to chat with friends, loved ones and family for free or at minimal expense. Adding to this new exciting future is the advent of video phones… where you can see the people you are talking with whether they live down the street or are in another country! And anyone with high speed Internet can get a video phone today. It’s not just a cartoon reality anymore. Another amazing fact is the video phone cost. It’s cheap!!! With my company’s service, the monthly charge is ONLY $28.99 plus the cost of a one time purchase for the phone ($189.00)! This is much less than round trip airfare to most major cities in the US and you can see your loved ones and friends every day rather than every few years.

Other possibilities on the drawing board are portable video phones that you can carry with you and use in wi-fi hotspots; video voice mail and email; larger video phones for your living room where the whole family can talk and see friends and family on a big screen; video conferencing with four other people (coming in the next quarter); cell phones with VoIP capabilities where consumers won’t have to use cell phone minutes at home or at wi-fi hotspots; and there will be services and features we haven’t even thought of yet.

Another facet of VoIP service is that you’re no longer tethered to the copper phone wires in your residence. The video phone or the VoIP adapter (ATA) is transportable. If you need to travel, your video phone or ATA can go along with you. When at your destination, just plug your VoIP phone/ATA into the hotel’s high speed Internet connection, and you’re ready to make and receive phone calls from home or the office (at no extra cost)!

The Jetsons’ future is here in 2008. We are at the beginning of a new wave of telecom technology that promises to change the way we’ve been communicating for over the past 100 years! Be ready for the exciting services and features that will be coming in the next few years.

ACN has seen this future and built its own VoIP network using the best equipment, technical staff and technology. ACN has 5 operating nodes across North America and Hawaii to insure it will be operating at the highest efficiency and customer satisfaction. Also, ACN’s network was built to carry video transmissions and so its capacity is greater than any other provider in the market. If you would like to learn more how you can take advantage of ACN’s VoIP service and save your hard earned money, please contact me, Linda Halladay, at: 719-359-8272 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . With ACN’s VoIP service, no special phones are necessary … ACN provides you with a phone adapter to plug into your modem or router and you are in business. Also, with ACN’s VoIP service you can make unlimited calls across the entire US, Canada and Puerto Rico for a low flat fee per month – international calls costs are at least half of the regular long distance rates on traditional land lines.
